Dear Friends
I am writing this on 25th August, the morning after our wonderful shared observation/marking of Ukrainian Independence Day at the Hub last night.
Huge thanks go to Svitlana Kondzelya, for initiating and orchestrating the event, with words, films, music and not least, the most fantastic spread of traditional Ukrainian food and drink. Thanks to everyone who came to the Pantry Partnership on Monday to prepare the vareniki and syrniki, and to those of you who baked at home. The food was truly delicious. Special thanks to Sue Kent and Sonnya Dabill for supporting the Monday cooking sessions at the Pantry all through July and August; but particularly for their hard work, support and encouragement this week. They were amazing last night and so were their Ukrainian cooks, who spent all evening in the kitchen. Sarah Beard coordinated the event and filled the hall with sunflowers. Rebecca created the flyer and the rest of the team arrived to join hosts and Ukrainian families. From all the messages that have come through this morning, it was very special for everyone who attended and a great privilege for us to be able to learn more about Ukraine and share in a date that has particular resonance this year.
So onwards and upwards and into September!
Dates for your diaries:
As mentioned in the last update, we have just sent out an invitation to Hosts to join us on September 10th from 5 – 6.30 at the Red Lion. Your early RSVPs would be much appreciated. A similar invitation will be going out to Ukrainians for September 20th but please share the date with your families so that they know it’s coming up.
Information:
Pantry Partnership – as mentioned above, this has been lovingly run by Sue and Sonnya each Monday so that adults can cook, talk and eat together. During July and August, it was not always fully attended. Last Monday (22nd), however, there were 10 women celebrating and sharing their amazing culinary skills.
We would really like to continue to offer the Pantry Partnership on Mondays; but during September both Sue and Sonnya have other engagements, so we propose to restart on Monday 3rd October. Please let us know if you would like to come.
Cars, Tax and Insurance – one of our hosts, Doric Bossom has spent quite a lot of time recently, talking with John Glen and the Ministry of Transport about importing a car from Ukraine. He shares the latest information on this:

Open Letter to the UK Government around Supporting Ukrainians:
We are delighted to see that 3,200 of you have signed our open letter to the UK government asking them to assist us in effectively supporting our guests. Not only has it caught the attention of the media, but it has inspired some Ukrainian friends to write a similar letter, thanking the government for opening the Homes for Ukraine scheme, and also highlighting some of the challenges they are facing.
If you have Ukrainian guests staying with you, or in your community, please share it with them so they can add their voice to these vital requests.
The letter can be found here:
Messages from members of the Hub:
- From Annie Riddell – one of our Hosts – is there any interest among Ukrainians in the area to play volleyball, if Salisbury Volleyball Club lay on some free sessions for adults and/or children over 12?
My husband would be happy to see if the club could organise something, depending on numbers. Please let Jane know at admin@salsiburyukrainehub.org.uk
- Also, the owner of Clown About (children’s soft play area) has offered free tickets to children wishing to visit the Centre. Please let Jane know at admin@salisburyukrainehub.org.uk if you would like to go.
- Irene Kohler has sent in an offer to provide a gift for any new-born Ukrainian babies in the Salisbury Area. Please let us know if you would like to get in touch with Irene. Please see the attached letter.
Cesca Eaton from La Folia is inviting people to participate in an exciting new creative project: Voices in the Landscape. Please see the attached let
